3 things to do right now
Before you worry about anything else, focus on these three steps.
Don’t pay any bills yet
Creditors may contact you, but most debts belong to the estate — not to you personally. Wait until you understand which debts are valid before paying anything.
Order 15+ death certificates
Every bank, insurer, and government agency will want an original. Order at least 15 certified copies from the county vital records office. You’ll use more than you think.
Check if there’s a will
Look in their home, safe deposit box, or with their attorney. A will names the executor and determines how assets are distributed. No will? That’s okay — your state has rules for that.
